It is estimated that even today, one in three women experiences physical, psychological or sexual violence from her partner, or some form of sexual harassment in the workplace.

Within the context of the broader evolution and civilisation of violence between people, new forms of violence have emerged alongside physical violence against women, which was traditionally regarded as the only form of violence against women.

Sexual, psychological, economic and social violence are some of these new forms. Other ways in which violence is exercised, directly or indirectly, include monitoring a woman’s private life, defamation, exerting influence on or threatening her employers in order to prevent her from being hired or to have her dismissed from a job, and depriving her of medical care and employment, all of which result in restrictions on her broader freedom.

Nevertheless, women are often reluctant to report violence.

This may be due to fear, shame, prejudice, self-blame, traditional social attitudes, as well as insufficient awareness of their rights. In the perpetrator-victim relationship, the phenomenon of transferring blame is often observed, with the woman — the victim — being convinced that she bears full responsibility for the perpetrator’s actions. In order to maintain his dominance, the perpetrator employs various tactics aimed at controlling the woman’s emotions and behaviour.

Through this psychological and emotional manipulation, the perpetrator convinces her that she is the only person who understands him and that she is important to him.

It has been recorded that a large proportion of perpetrators come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, have low self-esteem, ended their education at lower secondary school, are usually unskilled, have psychological problems or have themselves experienced physical violence at some stage of their lives.

The woman — the victim — needs support from her social network.

It is essential for her to realise that she is not responsible for the violence inflicted upon her by her father, partner, employer, etc., as she may have been led to believe until now. With appropriate psychological support from government organisations or NGOs, a woman can regain her self-confidence and believe in herself again, create the life she truly desires and deserves, and establish boundaries that will lead to an end to the violence against her.

Women who postpone the decision to react inevitably end up losing themselves, becoming submerged in an environment of violence.

Failure to condemn the perpetrator leads both to the intensification of his attacks and to the imitation of his actions by other potential perpetrators. Consequently, given the extent of the problem, this is not merely an individual issue, but a broader social one, as society is deprived of the full potential of a balanced woman as an employee, wife, mother and, more generally, as a citizen.

Violence Against Women
For current information on violence against women and gender equality, see UN Women.

Published in the newspaper Pontiaki Gnomi
July–August 2015
Issue No. 76–77

Violence Against Women – An article by detective Nikos Pelekasis, originally published in the newspaper Pontiaki Gnomi.
