Women's Day

A different generation

An interview of the detective Pelekasi Nikos in the newspaper “Pontiaki Gnomi”.

In the crisis that our country has been experiencing for years, young people, as it was inevitable, have changed their ways of entertainment, except for a portion of young people who, for various reasons, have not been touched by the crisis and remain frequent patrons of restaurants, cafes and bars.

Another group of young people continue the same way of having fun by limiting their outings and choosing cheap bars (orthadika) and having a drink to keep them entertained until the morning. Also many choose milder ways of entertainment, on beaches and national deserts, setting up improvised tents and with radios, guitars they have fun until the morning. A large number of young people are those who have had the opportunity and acquired a car but due to the expensive fuel they have difficulty driving it. They are the ones who followed something different. In a place that is ideal because it is far from a residential area, namely the car parks at the SEF, every Thursday night they have a date by partying until dawn with the decibels at full throttle.

Hundreds of participants and spectators take refuge in the Peace and Friendship Stadium early in order to get a good seat.

Later the music starts. They enjoy the loud sound by dancing even on the hood, approving the best sound performance and receiving satisfaction by looking at their partner with a smile. The showdown is honest and well-intentioned.

If one gets confused with them, one meets cheerful laughing children who manage to forget their troubles. What is surprising is that there are no gangs or brawls. They behave like one big familiar group. The songs that can be heard are of many kinds but Greek songs predominate and even the popular ones. On hearing them they dance on improvised dance floors or on the shiny hoods of their not necessarily expensive cars. The nearby canteen offers junk food and experiences for those who can afford it. The revelry ends late in the evening and the date is renewed for next week.

Eventually the Greek children, as genuine descendants of the resourceful Odysseus, find ways to resist, to have fun and every now and then, by turning up the music, they declare that WE ARE HERE, confirming the slogan of a TV station that the best things in life are not things. It might just be a Thursday night at the Peace and Friendship Stadium.
