DNA is the ultimate research tool, with the exception of identical twins, no two people have the same genetic material. In this way, the DNA evidence collected can be linked to one target or rule out another. For example, during a sexual assault, evidence such as hair, cells or semen remains on the victim’s body and in other parts of the site.
The use of DNA as evidence may also require the collection and analysis of elimination samples to determine the exact form of DNA. Samples are taken from anyone who had legal access to the crime scene or contact with the victim and may have left biological material.
When investigating a rape case, it may be necessary to obtain a DNA sample from everyone who had consensual contact with the victim within 72 hours of the sexual assault. This takes into account all DNA found on the victim or at the crime scene to exclude them from the investigation.
