The collection of genetic material can be used in paternity identification, kinship identification, theft cases, forensic cases, murder cases, rape, beatings, etc.
State-of-the-art DNA laboratories can solve and help solve many crimes. Through the examination of biological material, a trace can be traced and identified at the scene of a crime. Evidence for analysis may include bloodstains or even food. Even the most susceptible genetic material (such as sweat and saliva), if not directly exposed to sunlight or moisture, can keep genetic material intact for up to two years.

Με τον τρόπο αυτό, τα αποδεικτικά στοιχεία DNA που συλλέγονται μπορούν να συνδεθούν με έναν στόχο ή να αποκλείσουν ένα άλλο. Για παράδειγμα κατά τη διάρκεια μιας σεξουαλικής επίθεσης στοιχεία όπως τρίχες, κύτταρα ή σπέρμα παραμένουν στο σώμα του θύματος και σε άλλα μέρη του χώρου.
Η χρήση του DNA ως αποδεικτικού υλικού μπορεί επίσης να απαιτεί τη συλλογή και ανάλυση δειγμάτων εξάλειψης για να προσδιοριστεί η ακριβής μορφή του DNA. Δείγματα λαμβάνονται από οποιονδήποτε είχε νόμιμη πρόσβαση στον τόπο του εγκλήματος ή επαφή με το θύμα και μπορεί να έχει αφήσει βιολογικό υλικό.
